THE RIVAS REVIEW

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Greetings from the Dominican Republic.  God is such an amazing God.  Sometimes I think that it is easier to see that when we are taken out of our comfort zone.  Living in the Dominican is being out of my comfort zone on a daily basis.  It is always such a challenge to go places, communicate with people, and just to go about daily living.  We have been so blessed that God has provided us a comfortable and safe apartment that a least helps make life a little easier.

Elections

We had the presidential election on May 16.  It seems to have been fairly peaceful.  I did hear that there were a few people killed but I haven't heard of any rioting.  A president has to be elected by 51% of the vote.  Often times there has to be a second election in June but from everything I've heard the white party candidate, Hipolito, won the election.  Praise God that it has been peaceful and there won't have to be a second election.

Kiosks

Alberto has spent a lot of time this spring working with various work teams that have been here.  They worked in the camp constructing kiosks (shelters) for classes and small groups.  He also helped a lot with transportation for the groups.  He helped with church construction in Yaguita de Pastor. The last two weeks he has preached in La Pina.  Praise God for safety in traveling and working.

Copier

I have had a new avenue of ministry given me.  The Yorks, York Dominican Mission, are leaving on furlough in June.  Part of their mission is providing Sunday School papers for the churches to use in the DR.  They have asked us to keep their copier this year while they are gone and I get the job of making approximately 1,000 copies each month.  This is great because it is something that I can do at home at my convenience (provided there is electricity, that means I can't wait till the last minute to make copies).  Praise God for an avenue of ministry for me.

Schools OUT

We are in the last weeks of school here.  The last day is June 9.  Time is flying by.  We are looking forward to the groups that are coming down this summer.  Alberto is planning on being very busy working with these groups.  Abigail and I will be flying back to Iowa in July to spend a month with my family.  This is the last time we can fly on one ticket and my parents have had some health problems this year so we feel it is important that I spend some time with them this summer.

Prayer Corner

We thank you for your prayers and ask that you continue to pray for the work here.  Alberto is feeling God's leading to begin a church in Montecristi.  Please pray for that work and the timing for us to move our ministry there.

Please pray for Alberto's brother, Hector, who needs some special help in dealing with problems.  May 26 Alberto and Hector will go for an interview at an institution for troubled youth.  We are praying that this might be the answer for helping Hector get the help he needs.  Pray that God performs a miracle in his life.

ABIGAIL'S ANTICS

Abigail is 1 year old, walking, and into everything. She is also very social. She loves to be around people. She is usually well-behaved when she is in groups because she likes attention. She is in her element. I can just hear her teachers now. Abigail likes to talk in class instead of doing her work and listening.
