I am doing much better since recovering from the flu. It was rough!! However, things turned for the better when Norma threatened me with an IV. I made myself keep liquids down at that point. Thank goodness for phenergan.
I was so happy!
However, God was so amazing to provide everything that we needed during the weeks that we were waiting for our supplies. We were getting low on meat (we ran out of meat at my house). Norma's stock was even low. She feeds us lunch each day after school. Man, that batch of fried chicken that we first had after the boat arrived was the best I have ever had. We also have ice cream. We cherish it while we can, because who knows when the boat will return.
I love teaching. It is definitely a challenge! Trying to teach on a 6th grade academic level with English as the second language is hard. We seem to constantly be having a vocabulary lesson. The kids are precious!! I do have several who are wonderful kids, but they are very hard. Of course, seeing what they have to deal with, I can understand.
Oh, but they just want to be loved!!!! They have an amazing knowledge of the Bible. The teachers here have done a terrific job teaching the Bible. However, some of the kids are very hesitant to trust. I pray daily that God will soften their hearts. What a difference He wants to make in their lives.
The temperature has cooled down to the low 80's. I had one girl who was cold today and wanted to wear her jacket all day. I loved the fact that I was not pouring sweat all day. Oh my, it is beautiful here. The sunsets on the ocean are amazing. You have to learn to look past the pigs eating garbage at your front door, but when you do... it is incredible.
Most days are good. However, there are days... when your bathroom is flooded and you are being followed by a swarm of mosquitos in the 400 degree heat... that you miss the comforts of America. (okay, I really miss Chik-fil-A French fries!!)
We have power most of the time. There have been some issues with the generators, but Roger has been able to get them back on. We do go without power everyday from 3:00 - 5:00ish. We had a scare about not being able to get gas... which would mean no power.
All gas comes from Port-Au-Prince. It has to go through a town called Gonaives. Well, there have been some major protests in Gonaives since evidently the president's army burned some man in the street. The people did not seem to look very highly on that. So, they cut the roads and burned somethings. I think that it has died down some. Norma and Roger keep us updated on all of that info.
Oh, we have had 2 baptisms since school has started. They are both 5th grade boys. It is pretty amazing to take my kids over to the ocean and watch a new brother in Christ being born. I pray that with each one, my students will see how much they need the Lord.
Carmen, the principal, has approached about doing a whole unit on the plan of salvation as a part of my Bible class. I look forward to that. I just do not feel that it is the time yet to do that. I think that I will need to that after Christmas. I waiting on God's lead.
Well, take care!!
In Christ,
Julie
