Dominican  Update  Newsletter  July  1988

Dear Friends in Christ,

Greetings from the hot and humid Dominican Republic. We are in the midst of another busy summer! We have our 9th group (out of 11) that are here working on our camp/conference center in Salcedo. We have made SO much progress that it really is encouraging to see. We have plastered both of the dorms, inside and out and they have been painted. We've almost finished the plastering on the inside of the dining hall and will do the outside and then start on the kitchen and the camp manager's home.

FAME has also agreed to fund a medical/dental clinic on the camp property and the work teams have dug and poured the footing for that building. We are also digging the footing and hope to pour that on the next dorm, which will be a two-story building that will sleep about 200 people. We're thrilled at the progress that we have seen and we have to thank the many teams and their leaders for the economic help with this project. Many of the teams coming this year helped start this project in 1994, came back in 1996 and then again this year. They were really pleased to see the progress.

We're already signing up teams for next summer probably a couple less than this year - we need a few more days between groups to recover! Let me know if your church is interested in coming next summer. Our vision for the conference center is that we will be able to rent it out to other evangelical groups and help pay the maintenance and upkeep on the center and also provide some income for future church construction projects.

We're hoping to continue work on the next dorm after the summer is over and for that we're going to need continued income for that project, which will be the most expensive that we have undertaken at the camp. We're estimating that the building will cost about $70,000, which is a lot of money. Please present this need to your church or mission committee. This conference center will be a blessing for the churches here long after our work here  is done and I am sure that it's a worthy project for your church to help with. If you have any questions about this project please feel free to e-mail or call me.

It's been great to have Emily home this summer and she has been working hard translating for the teams at camp. Laurie really enjoyed her time in Washington and learned  a lot. Suzanne and I have been saying "Hi" and Bye" a lot this summer with my crazy schedule but we have a few days for a short vacation coming up soon.

Take care and please continue to pray for us.

In Christ,

Rick York
